My absolutely favourite tips to catch Northern Lights
Since I was a child, I’ve dreamed of witnessing the Northern Lights. Coming from Argentina, seeing the Northern Lights in Norway has been one of my deepest desires. I used to paint and draw the lights in the sky. In 2017, this big dream came true when I saw them for the very first time in the Lofoten Islands. That night, something inside me changed, and my feeling of belonging here grew stronger. I knew I wanted to live here. Watching the Northern Lights is truly magical, unreal, and unique. After many years living in the Arctic, I’m excited to share my favorite tips for a successful hunt:
The season for the Northern Lights runs from September to March, and no, there isn’t a specific month when they’re stronger or weaker. Every week and every month is completely different. The one condition that makes an Aurora hunt successful or not is the WEATHER. As long as the sky is clear, you will see the Northern Lights. So, my first tip is to book your holiday for at least a week to increase your chances, as you’ll have several nights to hunt during the season.
The second tip is to download the AURORA app and activate notifications and location tracking. Once you have that, check the live stream cameras wherever you are. If you’re staying in Svolvær, open the YR app (the one we use for weather) and check the live stream cameras. Find SKROVA and check the sky there from time to time. You can also check the SVINOYA RORBUER live stream cameras and the AURORA app. If you spot something in the sky, head outside because you have a good chance of witnessing an Aurora explosion.
My favorite spots for Aurora hunting are Gimsøya Island and its surroundings. The sky is usually clear there, and due to its location, you get an excellent view of the sky, making it a top location for Aurora hunting. Additionally, beaches like Haukland and Uttakleiv are also great spots.
Bring a tripod and attach your phone or camera to it. This will keep your pictures in focus. Always dress in layers to avoid freezing. I’m sure that by following these tips, you’ll get to see the Northern Lights! Be patient, because the most beautiful moments often happen when we least expect them.
