Essential Tips to Stay Warm and Cozy in the Arctic

Before coming to the Arctic, I used to freeze—always. Coming from Argentina and without knowledge of how to dress warmly, I found myself shivering repeatedly. But when I arrived in the Arctic, I learned how to dress properly for the cold. Since then, I’ve never felt cold during my winters here, nor in my travels to other cold destinations. So, here are my favorite winter hacks to stay warm and cozy, even on below-zero walks and while hunting for the Northern Lights:

The first rule is to dress in layers, like an onion. Start with a merino wool base layer—top and bottom—along with a nice pair of thick woolen socks. Woolen underwear is even better for extra warmth. Consider wearing a thick woolen sweater, and on top of that, a down jacket. Mine is rated for -20°C and I got it at Zara. The key is to avoid synthetic fabrics and rely on wool or cotton clothing.

Next, wear breathable, waterproof, and windproof pants to prevent the cold from cutting through. Pair these with winter boots that have a heavy grip. Avoid sneakers, sports shoes, and jeans. In Lofoten, everyone dresses for the outdoors, and comfort and warmth take priority over looking stylish.

Here’s my packing list for a week in the Lofoten Islands:

  • 1 pair of waterproof pants

  • 2 to 3 woolen sweaters

  • 2 pairs of merino wool base layers (100%)

  • 5 pairs of woolen socks

  • 1 thick down jacket (rated for -20°C)

  • Woolen beanie and woolen gloves

  • A thick wool scarf

  • A headlamp for the dark

  • Winter shoe patches to keep your feet warm, in case you tend to freeze easily

  • A pair of spikes to prevent slipping when the ground gets icy (available at supermarkets)

  • Lip balm with vitamin E and castor oil to prevent dry skin and lips

  • Swimsuit ( if you go for a cold dip or a sauna session! )

Follow these tips, and you’ll be well prepared for your winter adventure in the Lofoten Islands!
