The Bentonite Hills, located outside Capitol Reef National Park on Bureau of Land Management land, are a unique and colorful geologic wonder. These softly-contoured hills display hues of brown, red, purple, gray, and green, formed from the Brushy Basin shale member of the Morrison Formation during Jurassic times. Accessible by the Hartnet Road (high clearance vehicle required), the area can become impassable when wet due to the slick and gummy nature of the Bentonite clay. Visitors are advised to check road conditions before heading out and to tread lightly to preserve this beautiful landscape.
