A town that puts an ancient spin on the river.

About Fenghuang

Fenghuang Ancient Town as it's known is a renovated old town set on the banks of the river - representing how the Miao and Tujia minorities used to live. The town keeps it's ancient aesthetic, making it a solid backdrop for some great photos.

During the day (especially in the early mornings), the town is a peaceful place to wander around and explore the alleyways.

I will say that as night falls, the town does turn into a bit more of a tourist hotspot as the colorful lights turn on and the town becomes full of noise as the bars open.

My tip? Unless you're a fan of loud noises, I'd suggest wandering around early morning and during the day and then find a nice spot to watch the city when the lights turn on.

Staying in Fenghuang

The whole area is full of hotels and there's something for all budgets. My only suggestion would be to pick one that is slightly outside of the official 'town'. The West side, especially, gets very loud during the evenings which could make it a slightly less comfortable evening.

Getting to Fenghuang

Fenghuang Ancient Town is just a few stops away from Zhangjiajie and you can get there by high speed rail.

Once at the train station you can take either a new maglev scenic tram to the scenic spot, or a taxi - it'll depend on where your hotel is.
