Kakahi Falls is located within the Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve, so you’ll need to pay to access the walk (check out the Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve page for details and prices). These falls are actually the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, which is pretty cool and makes them a must-see.
This sacred Maori site is surrounded by steaming fumaroles and boiling mud pools. As I walked around the falls, I learned that the Maori once used them as a bathing spot to wash the blood off their bodies after battles. It’s always so fascinating to learn about the history of these places and try to imagine what they were like hundreds of years ago.
