Rotopokaka, aka Coca Cola Lake, is such a quirky little gem on the Karikari Peninsula! The lake gets its cola-like red-brown colour from natural tannins in the water, making it look like someone just poured a giant soft drink. Locals even swear by its healing properties, which adds to its charm.
When I visited, I got to witness the cutest thing, a horse and its owner taking a dip together! How wholesome is that? The water here is shallow and super calm, making it perfect for families or anyone keen on a laid-back swim.
Oh, and if you’re road-tripping, there’s a freedom campsite right next door at Tokerau Beach. It’s seriously a slice of heaven being able to park almost on the sand, with the sound of waves lulling you to sleep. Definitely a spot to add to your Northland itinerary!
