Buried Village of Te Wairoa is the perfect spot if you’re keen to dive into the fascinating and tragic history of Rotorua. The site offers an in-depth look at the aftermath of the 1886 Mt Tarawera Eruption. Entry costs $32 for adults, but definitely check out BOOKME for discounts, I scored mine for just $18.
When you arrive, you’ll get a map and pamphlet for a self-guided tour, starting with exhibits in the museum. Then, you can explore the excavated sites and finish with a peaceful walk along the Te Wairoa Falls Trail, where you’ll be treated to a stunning waterfall. The walk will take you about 1 hour in total. The village is open from Wednesday to Sunday, and it’s such a unique experience to connect with the region's volcanic past.
