The Kauaeranga Kauri Trail, also known as the Pinnacles Walk, is one of the most iconic hikes on the North Island and a must-do if you’re a fan of hiking. Located in the Coromandel Forest Park, this trail leads to the Pinnacles Hut and summit, offering some of the best views of the Coromandel Peninsula.
This intermediate-level trail can be done as either a day trip or an overnight adventure. Personally, I tackled it in one day, but you can take your time if you prefer. The trail starts at Kauaeranga Valley Road End and is about 7.5 kilometres to the summit. Along the way, you'll cross several streams and walk over adorable little swing bridges.
The first 5 kilometres are a challenge with a steady incline, but after that, you’ll be treated to 1.5 kilometres of mostly flat ground, a welcomed break after all those stairs! The last 1 kilometre requires a bit of scrambling to reach the summit, but it’s not too technical, and there are ladders and bars to help you climb.
The views from the summit are breathtaking, overlooking the lush green mountain ranges. After soaking in the views, you’ll retrace your steps to the Hydro Camp. You can then choose to either walk back down the path you came, making the hike 15 kilometres in total or take the Billy Goat Circuit, which is about 10 kilometres and brings the total loop to 18 kilometres. I opted for the circuit and loved it, though be warned, there’s plenty of mud and a creek crossing at the very end of the trail. It took me 6 hours and 40 minutes to complete the loop and is generally a 6-8hour hike.
Both routes involve a lot of stairs, so make sure to take it slow and be kind to your knees. This trail is incredibly popular, especially with families, as the Pinnacles Hut is the largest hiker's hut in New Zealand, making it a top destination for groups looking for adventure in the great outdoors.
