If you're cruising around the East Cape, make sure to check out the Te Waha o Rerekohu, aka the Oldest Pohutukawa Tree. Located in Te Araroa, this massive tree is over 600 years old and holds the title of New Zealand's largest pohutukawa. Its branches stretch out over 37 meters, making it pretty impressive to see in person.

The name "Te Waha o Rerekohu" means "the mouth of Rerekohu" in Māori, and it has cultural significance to the local iwi. You’ll get to see this giant tree standing tall, especially during summer when it blooms with vibrant red flowers. It’s definitely worth a stop if you’re nearby, and a great way to appreciate both nature and Māori heritage.
