For the best views of the rolling hills of Hawke’s Bay, you’ve got to check out Te Mata Peak. You can either drive up, but be careful, the road is narrow and winding, so keep an eye out for oncoming traffic. (I swear all NZ roads are like this ahaha.) Or, if you’re keen to get some steps in, you can hike up instead. The most popular trail starts at the Te Mata Peak Road car park and is 4.3 km return, but there are heaps of other trails in the park. Check a map and mix and match them to create your own route.
At the summit, you’re treated to stunning views stretching over rolling hills, vineyards, and all the way out to the ocean. This would be such a good spot for sunrise or sunset.
One little disclaimer, I had a few locals message me saying some sketchy characters hang out here at night. I didn’t visit after dark and had a 10/10 experience, but just passing it on in case it’s helpful.
