Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) is definitely one of my favorite lakes around Rotorua, and it's a total local go to on a hot summer’s day. This stunning crater lake gets its mesmerizing aqua-blue color from the pumice and rhyolite on the lakebed, making it one of the most picturesque spots in the area. It’s super popular for swimming, boating, jet skiing, and even trout fishing, so there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Plus, there are walking and biking tracks around the lake, so you can explore the surrounding native forest-covered hills at your own pace.
But here's a cool twist, according to maori legend, a mischievous taniwha monster named Kataore once roamed the lake, which just adds a little extra mystery to its already enchanting vibe. Whether you’re out there on the water or just relaxing by the shore, it’s a perfect spot to soak in the beauty and chill out in the crystal-clear water.
