If you're looking for a unique adventure in New Zealand, Mount Tarawera should definitely be on your list. This active volcano, which famously erupted in 1886, caused massive destruction, including the loss of the Pink and White Terraces (once called the unofficial 8th wonder of the world) and the burial of a nearby village—something you can learn more about at the Buried Village site (check out my map for more info on that!).
Important note: To hike around Mount Tarawera, you can’t just go wandering on your own. It's a guided tour-only area, and the tours are run by Kaitiaki Adventures. The half-day tour costs about $209 per adult, but definitely check out the Bookme app for deals—I snagged mine for just $99. The tour includes transport and takes you through some seriously dramatic volcanic landscapes, and the guides are super knowledgeable, diving deep into the Māori history and spiritual significance of the area to local iwi (tribes).
As for the hike itself, I didn’t track the distance, but I’d estimate it’s about 3 kilometers. It’s beginner-friendly, with the group taking plenty of breaks to listen to the guide. The only tricky part is a section where you slide down some scree (volcanic debris and rocks). It’s a bit of a challenge to keep your balance, but it’s all in good fun! Don’t worry if you end up on your butt like half the group—it's totally normal to slide and laugh along the way!
