Starting at Gefyra Bridge, where you’ll find a café and free parking, the hike to Preveli Beach takes approximately 2.5 hours each way. This circular route leads you along both sides of the gorge before descending to the beach, offering breathtaking views throughout. While the hike includes some moderate elevation changes, it is generally of easy to medium difficulty. However, as most of the trail is exposed, it’s best to avoid hiking during the peak summer months of July and August.
Route Description
Park at Preveli Bridge and take a moment to admire the 18th-century Venetian cobbled bridge. From there, cross the river and follow the dirt road opposite the taverna. This path runs alongside the river, and after about 25 minutes, you’ll reach a small chapel. While the gate can be opened, the chapel itself remains locked.
Continuing between the gorge’s rock walls, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic—exercise caution when looking down into the gorge. The trail gradually narrows as you approach the parking lot above Preveli Beach. From here, descend the steps to reach the beach, where you’ll find a stunning lagoon lined with palm trees. Take a refreshing dip in the river before heading toward the sandy shore.
To begin your return journey, cross to the opposite side of the beach and climb the steps. Upon reaching a gate, take the narrow path to your left. Watch your step among the purple-flowering thyme bushes and thorny shrubs. Follow the orange trail markers as the path winds along the gorge. While the left side of the gorge is considered more picturesque, the sweeping views from this side are equally rewarding. Continue following the markers until you reach your starting point.
