The monastery of Moni Kapsa lies on the south east coast, between Makrygialos and Goudouras.

The monastery looks as though it has been carved into the hill at the exit of Pervolakia Gorge, looking out over the Libyan Sea with Koufonissi Island opposite. There are several beaches in the vicinity of the monastery which was founded in the 15th century but destroyed by pirates in 1471. The site was deserted for centuries and it was only in 1841 that it was rebuilt by the hermit Ioannis Vitsentzos or Gerontoyiannis. He led a non virtuous life but underwent a transformation to piety after his daughter was killed in a fire and he spent the last years of his life in the higher up cave. The monastery is dedicated to John the Baptist. Kapsa Monastery celebrates its feast-day on 29th of August, (the Beheading of John the Baptist). Thousands of faithful come from various parts of Crete to attend this great festival, some coming on foot from nearby villages.

The cave of the hermit Gerontoyiannis is accessible by stairs and the monastery chapel can also be visited. Kapsa Monastery is open daily at 06.30-12.30 and 15.30-19.00. There are strict rules of suitable dress for entering the church.

It is quite easy to find a place to park in the shade of the trees in the small beach just below the monastery.
