Abraham Lake is Alberta's largest reservoir and it's particularly known for its unique ice bubbles that form in the ice when the lake freezes during the winter months. This occurs when methane gas released from decaying plants forms bubbles as it gets trapped in the ice.
While you can see the bubbles on other lakes too, Abraham Lake has by far the best ones (and they’re everywhere!!). There are multiple viewing spots along the lake, but we usually find the best bubbles at spot which is marked Abraham Lake Ice Bubbles Viewpoint in Google Maps. Just pack lots of layers as this area is known for extreme winds!
PS: Since it's a bit of a drive from all directions, make sure to visit this website prior to your drive to see the current reports from Abraham Lake!
