Akureyrarkirkja, commonly known as The Church of Akureyri, is an iconic Lutheran church in the center of the Icelandic city of Akureyri. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and completed in 1940, the grand building boasts a stunning 3200-pipe organ and contains works from renowned sculptors such as Ásmundur Sveinsson, Edvard Lehmann, Corrado Vigni and Bertel Thorvaldsen. In 2017, the church experienced unfortunate vandalism that led to 20 million ISK worth of damage. However, despite this initial setback, Akureyrarkirkja today stands proud at the heart of the city as a beautiful ode to Iceland's rich cultural and artistic history.
