Washpen Falls is a hidden gem of New Zealand. It has an almost lost world feel with tall gorge walls, a powerful cascade, lush ferns and moss, and a dramatic forest setting. The easy 3.1km track undulates through Douglas fir and Radiata pine forests, featuring a huge lava boulder from the Ice Age and a glimpse of the Canterbury Plains at Bluff Lookout. The highlight is arriving at Washpen Falls itself, where you can take in the Mystical atmosphere from above, as mist swirls around the cascading waterfall, before descending to the base for a dip in the pool (when it's warm enough!). This unique walk is well worth a visit, offering views, history and a tranquil escape from everyday life.
