The Monastery of Serra do Pilar is a historically and culturally significant attraction located on the southern banks of the Dom Luís I Bridge overlooking Porto, Portugal. It is an impressive site featuring a circular church designed in Renaissance and Mannerist elements and an enclosed cloister, as well as dormitories which housed the Augustinian monks who inhabited the monastery in its heyday. The men who lived and worked here had a clear view of the city across the Douro river, making the spot invaluable for military strategies during the Peninsular War. Today, while it’s still used as a place of worship, the Monastery of Serra do Pilar also stands as a reminder of the region’s tumultuous and interesting past.
