Cabo da Roca ("Roca Cape") is continental Europe's westernmost point, located in the municipality of Sintra, Portugal, just less than one hour away from Lisbon.
The Cabo da Roca lighthouse began operating in 1772, just a few decades after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Lisbon in the 18th century.
This is the perfect spot to overlook the Atlantic Ocean and imagine how the Portuguese engaged in the Age of Sail since the mid-15th century.
It is always very windy there, so make sure you bring appropriate clothing.
