June is the month of several festivities in Portugal! Lisbon's Festa dos Santos Populares is a homage to Santo António, São João and São Pedro (Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter) and is allegedly the happiest moment of the year, marking the transition from Spring to Summer, a legacy of medieval pagan festivals in Europe.
In downtown Lisbon, the celebrations are also characterized by the Marchas Populares (parades), which take place at Avenida da Liberdade ("Liberty Avenue"). It's an unique moment throughout the year and the perfect timing to eat grilled sardines!
June 13th, 24th and 29th, in particular, are the most celebrated days in Portugal, depending on each city's traditions, due to each Saints' day, respectively (Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter).
