The Walhalla memorial in Donaustauf, Bavaria is a stunning neo-classical building modelled after the Parthenon in Athens and located above the Danube River. It was commissioned in 1807 by Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria with the purpose of honoring distinguished people in German history - "politicians, sovereigns, scientists and artists of the German tongue". The Walhalla commemorate individuals that span 2000 years of history, from Arminius who won the battle at Teutoburg Forest to Ludwig van Beethoven who was added in 1866. Visitors can explore the various busts and plaques throughout the two storeys of this impressive hall, all arranged in chronological order. It's an amazing representation of Germany’s diverse past and a great way to appreciate the country’s rich history.
