This ancient rock art, created in the Barrier Canyon Style, features striking red figures including one that resembles a large flying creature—earning it the nickname “the dragon.” Thought to be thousands of years old, the panel sparks debate among experts regarding its age and meaning, making it one of the more intriguing sites in Utah’s desert landscape.

Black Dragon Wash, located about 13 miles west of Green River, Utah, off Interstate 70, is home to the mysterious and iconic Black Dragon Pictograph Panel.

Access to the panel requires a high-clearance vehicle, as the road into the wash is sandy and rough in spots. However, for those without 4x4, it’s completely doable to park near the entrance and walk in—the panel is just about a 0.5-mile hike from the main road. The short trail winds through the canyon and offers a fun, easy adventure through towering rock walls and desert terrain.

The area is dog-friendly, and you’re welcome to bring your pup along for the hike, but they should be kept on a leash—off-road vehicles may be passing through the wash at high speeds, and the terrain is rocky and uneven in some places. Keeping your dog close helps protect them and preserve the fragile site.

Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the surrounding BLM-managed land. There are no developed campsites, toilets, or water sources, so come prepared for primitive camping. You’ll find plenty of open space with beautiful desert views for a peaceful overnight stay.

There’s no fee to visit the Black Dragon Panel—it's free and open to the public thanks to BLM management.

The best time to visit is spring or fall when temperatures are cooler and the lighting is ideal for photography. The golden hours just after sunrise or before sunset bring out rich tones in the rock and pictographs, making for stunning photos.

Whether you're interested in ancient art, off-the-beaten-path exploration, or just want a quiet place to camp and wander, Black Dragon Wash is a beautiful, remote slice of the Utah desert worth experiencing.
