Yant Flat Trailhead, located in the Dixie National Forest near St. George, Utah, is a scenic and moderately challenging out-and-back trail totaling approximately 3.4 miles. Hikers can expect to spend around 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes completing the route, though additional time is recommended to explore the stunning sandstone formations at the end, commonly known as the Candy Cliffs. These cliffs showcase dramatic marbled red, orange, and yellow sandstone at the edge of the Colorado Plateau, offering excellent opportunities for photography and quiet exploration.
The hike includes sandy sections and a final portion that is less clearly marked, with cairns providing general guidance. For early or late hikes, especially in low light, a GPS device or offline map is strongly recommended. Many visitors choose to camp in the parking area overnight for early access to sunrise views, which can be particularly spectacular.
Pet-Friendliness
Dogs are allowed on the trail as long as they remain leashed. The terrain is generally dog-friendly, with plenty of soft sandstone to walk on. However, there is no shade along the trail, so it's essential to bring extra water and take necessary precautions during warmer months. In hot weather, consider hiking early in the morning or late in the evening and protecting your dog's paws from heated rock surfaces.
Camping and BLM Land Nearby
While there are no developed campgrounds at Yant Flat, dispersed camping is permitted in the surrounding BLM land. The trailhead parking area itself is commonly used by overnight campers. Nearby, the Danish Ranch Road (FR031) has multiple pullouts and previously used flat areas suitable for tents, vans, and small RVs. These are primitive campsites with no facilities, so visitors must be fully self-sufficient—there are no bathrooms, water sources, or trash services.
Dispersed camping follows a 14-day stay limit in any one spot, and all visitors should follow Leave No Trace principles to minimize impact. Be sure to pack out all trash and avoid disturbing the natural environment.
Caution should be taken if rain is in the forecast, as the access road becomes extremely slick and muddy, potentially making it impassable even for vehicles with four-wheel drive. When conditions are dry, the road is typically manageable with a standard vehicle, though high clearance is still recommended.

The best lighting for photography occurs during sunrise and sunset, when the soft light enhances the contours and colors of the rock formations.
Temperatures can be extreme in the summer; plan your visit accordingly to avoid the midday heat.
