We review and rate the accommodation that we personally have stayed at!
If booking through a safari company, then they will have a number of lodges that they are already working with and can recommend to you.
However, all the lodges we list below you can also book directly yourself. If you really like the look of the place and your safari company hasn't suggested it to you, then you should definitely ask them if they can arrange a stay there!
Four of these accommodations were part of the 'mid-range' package and one, Signature Serengeti, was a luxury tented camp.
It's also worth noting that we are VERY fussy, particularly when it comes to the cleanliness of accommodation, the service from the staff and also how quiet it is (as we are light sleepers!), so hopefully this will give you a good idea of what to expect!
Location: Arusha
Our rating: 7/10
Why we loved it:
The gardens in the hotel were beautiful
It had a lovely view of Mount Meru
The breakfast was great!
The rooms were clean & the surroundings were quiet!
The beds were comfortable
We had a great night's sleep
The staff were pleasant
What we didn't love:
The rooms were a little dated
The prices for the meal in the evening was a little high for what we had!
The pool area could get really busy
Would we stay again: Yes we would!
Location: Near Lake Manyara National Park
Our rating: 7/10
Why we loved it:
Each room comes with a private plunge pool on the balcony
The views are absolutely spectacular - the sunset from our balcony was the best we saw on the whole trip!
The food was absolutely delicious!
The staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel so welcome
The rooms are huge!
It has a gorgeous bath (overlooking the beautiful views)
It was very quiet, we had a good night's sleep.
What we didn't love:
When you look a bit closer, the rooms are quite tired and a little run down. They do need some updating.
There are a lot of bugs in the area due to the location! Therefore it's inevitable that some end up in your room unfortunately. You do have a mosquito net over the bed which we would highly recommend using! This was probably where we saw the most bugs!
Would we stay again: Yes we would, despite the tiredness and bugs, the views are just stunning!
Location: Ndutu Region
Our rating: 4/10
Why we loved it:
It was in the heart of the National Park and we saw zebra and antelope wandering through camp
It had a lovely campfire area
They put hot water bottles into the bed ready for us, which was a nice touch
Probably one of the best showers we had in a tented camp!
What we didn't love:
The food was OK, nothing special
The dining tent was 'open' and with that come all the bugs flocking to the lights!
The tent and facilities were clean, but everything is a little more rough around the edges due to it being a 'mobile' tented camp. See our travel tip on mobile tented camps!
The vibe of the staff was a little off in this place. We can't quite put our finger on it, they weren't quite as friendly and laid back as the staff in other accommodations
The staff were watching a football match very late at night from their staff quarters and unfortunately as we were the closest tent to them, we could hear EVERYTHING! It was such a shame, but we just didn't get a good night's sleep here
Would we stay again: No we wouldn't.
Location: Serengeti National Park
Our rating: 9/10
Why we loved it:
We loved everything about this camp!
The staff were absolutely wonderful, so friendly and they couldn't do enough for us!
The food was wonderful here! Dinner and breakfast, there was a wonderful variety!
The tents were absolutely gorgeous, definitely the best tented camp that we stayed in!
The camp was situated in the heart of the Serengeti! We saw antelope wandering through camp which was magical
Each tent had its own veranda with chairs overlooking the park
The tents were huge!
We had a wonderful night's sleep here. But bear in mind you will hear animals!! (Nothing beats the first time you hear a lion roar from your bed!)
What we didn't love:
They had some communal outside areas, but due to it being a newer camp there wasn't really anywhere to sit in the communal areas.
Would we stay again: Yes, in a heartbeat! We LOVED this one!
Location: Rim of the Ngorongoro Crater
Our rating: 7/10
Why we loved it:
We loved the feel of this camp and the layout of the camp
The decor in the rooms of this camp was lovely!
The staff were very friendly and welcoming
The food was great!
They had umbrellas in each room (these are much needed as they get a lot of rain up there!)
It's in a fantastic location for the Ngorongoro Crater which means you can get into the Crater really early the next day (which you need to do to avoid the crowds!)
We had a good night's sleep here!
What we didn't love:
They only had bucket showers. This means you have to give them a time and your preferred temperature so that they can fill up the tank outside your room for you! The shower was more of a trickle!
There was a slight damp smell in the tent. They get a lot of rain here due to the position of it on the Ngorongoro Crater rim so unfortunately it's unavoidable.
Would we stay again: Yes we would!
