Sooke Potholes Provincial Park offers many great photography opportunities, from the unique rock formations in the main canyon to two beautiful waterfalls. It is well worth a visit.

The first is Todd Creek Falls, which is impossible to miss—it sits right next to Sooke River Road. While the waterfall itself tends to look better from a distance, the moss-covered trees surrounding it steal the show, adding incredible texture and depth to your shots.

The second is Mary Vine Falls, a short but rewarding 1.4 km out-and-back hike. The trail starts on the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, just a few hundred meters from the parking lot. Look for the first main trail on the rightPedan Lake Trail, which will lead you straight to the falls. Mary Vine Falls is best visited from late autumn to early spring, as it tends to dry in the summer.

While the falls are spectacular, they can be tricky to photograph. The top of the waterfall often receives more light, even on cloudy days, making it easy to blow out highlights. To balance the scene properly, keep an eye on your exposure.

With its stunning landscapes and easy access, Sooke Potholes is a fantastic stop for photographers looking to capture some of Vancouver Island’s rugged beauty.
