Hoffellsjökull is an impressive outlet glacier that cascades out of the ice cap of Vatnajökull, in Hornafjörður, southeast Iceland. The glacier’s name comes from Hoffell, a mountainous area composed of farmland, which is part of the Vatnajökull National Park. During the Little Ice Age in the mid-1400s, the Hoffellsjökull glacier advanced and blocked the gorges of Hoffellsfjöll and Núpar, forming Glacial lakes in the process. For many years, Lorries filled with glacial ice from Hoffellsjökull were transported to Höfn for use in cooling fish both onshore and at sea. Nowadays, research has confirmed that this glacier moves at an extremely rapid rate of two metres per day due to its high levels of precipitation and runoff. Its retreat has left a deep lake in its wake, creating a beautiful natural wonder!
