The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal) in Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s most iconic landmarks. Carved into a sandstone rock face, this poignant sculpture commemorates the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution while defending the Tuileries Palace in 1792.

Designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and completed in 1821, the monument depicts a dying lion pierced by a spear, lying atop a shield adorned with the fleur-de-lis of the French monarchy. The lion’s expression of pain and dignity makes it a powerful symbol of loyalty and sacrifice.

The monument is set in a peaceful park, surrounded by a small pond and lush greenery, making it a tranquil spot for reflection. It’s a short walk from Lucerne’s Old Town and can be easily visited as part of a city tour.
The Lion Monument is free to visit and open year-round. It’s located in the Löwenplatz area, about a 10-minute walk from the Chapel Bridge or Lucerne train station.

Seraina’s Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the day for a quieter experience, as the monument is a popular tourist spot. Combine your visit with the nearby Glacier Garden to learn more about the region’s natural history and enjoy the surrounding park.
