Some cultural norms and what to think about
Photography Etiquette:
Respect the local culture and traditions. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, and be mindful of cultural norms, such as removing shoes before entering someoneās home.
Greetings and Politeness
Greetings are an integral part of Zanzibari culture. A warm āJamboā (hello) or āKaribuā (welcome) is often met with smiles.
Swahili Language:
While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Swahili phrases enhances your interactions and is appreciated by locals. āAsanteā (thank you) and āKaribuā (youāre welcome) go a long way.
Removing Shoes
When entering someoneās home, itās customary to remove your shoes. This practice signifies respect for the living space and cleanliness.
Respecting Islamic Traditions
Recognize that Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. During the holy month of Ramadan, be considerate of fasting locals, and avoid public eating during daylight hours. Public display of affection, such as kissing or holding hands, is considered offensive.
