Greetings are an integral part of Zanzibari culture. A warm “Jambo” (hello) or “Karibu” (welcome) is often met with smiles.
Swahili Language:
While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Swahili phrases enhances your interactions and is appreciated by locals. “Asante” (thank you) and “Karibu” (you’re welcome) go a long way.
Removing Shoes
When entering someone’s home, it’s customary to remove your shoes. This practice signifies respect for the living space and cleanliness.
Respecting Islamic Traditions
Recognize that Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. During the holy month of Ramadan, be considerate of fasting locals, and avoid public eating during daylight hours. Public display of affection, such as kissing or holding hands, is considered offensive.
