Greyfriars Kirkyard is an historic graveyard located in the Old Town of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was first established in 1561–1562 and holds some of Edinburgh's most famous and important residents. This public graveyard has been home to notable burials such as those of Covenanters, Greyfriars Bobby (the loyal dog who guarded his master's grave for 14 years) and Sir George Mackenzie's tomb. The graveyard features a variety of monuments, the most impressive being Martyrs' Monument, designed by the architect James Smith, and modelled on the Tempietto di San Pietro, designed by Donato Bramante. Greyfriars Kirkyard has also been used as a setting for several portraits and tableaux during the early days of photography in the 1840s, making it a unique and popular tourist destination.
