Fushimi Inari - it's Instagram famous for a reason, but those dreamy photos of empty orange torii gates? Yeah, that's not happening during daylight hours. This place is packed.
BUT... hit it up after dark and it's a whole different experience. There's something delightfully spooky about walking through those endless orange gates at night, fox statues lurking in the shadows, the crowds thinned out to almost nothing. The eerie atmosphere actually feels more authentic to what a mountain shrine should feel like.
If you're in Kyoto, you kind of have to see it - just maybe save it for sunset when the tour buses have left and the lanterns start casting shadows through the gates.
