There are many different trails for this mountain. If you use the ropeway, it takes about 2 hours to the summit and still provides a challenging hike and a breathtaking scenery at the summit hence it is my recommended route unless you are looking for a challenge.

Trailhead: Gassan Ropeway Station

Accessibility & How to Get to the Trailhead:

  • By Car:
Drive to the Gassan Ropeway Base Station, where parking is available. From there, take the ropeway to the upper station, which serves as the starting point for the hike.

  • By Public Transport:
Take a bus from Tsuruoka Station or Yamagata Station to the Gassan Ropeway Base Station. From there, take the ropeway to the upper station, where the hike begins.

Hike Details:

  • Distance: Approx. 6 km (round trip)

  • Duration: 4 hours

  • Incline: 600 meters

  • Difficulty: Moderate – The ropeway shortens the ascent, but there are still some steep sections near the summit.

General Information & Summary:

Mt. Gassan, standing at 1,984 meters, is known for its spiritual significance as part of the Dewa Sanzan (Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa). Using the Gassan Ropeway, you’ll start the hike at a higher elevation, making the trail more accessible and less strenuous than the full ascent. From the Gassan Ropeway Upper Station, the trail begins with a relatively gentle slope, gradually revealing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

As you climb higher, you’ll pass through alpine meadows and flower fields, with many stunning viewpoints along the way. The trail offers expansive vistas, and on clear days, you can even see as far as Mt. Chokai and Mt. Zao in the distance.

The final section near the summit becomes steeper, but the well-maintained trail and chains in key spots help make the ascent manageable. Reaching the summit of Mt. Gassan rewards hikers with a serene shrine at the peak, adding to the cultural significance of the hike.

Key Points:

  • Sacred History: Mt. Gassan is one of the Dewa Sanzan and has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. The summit shrine is an important destination for those seeking a spiritual experience.

  • Best Time to Hike: The best time to hike Mt. Gassan is from July to early October, as the trail is covered in snow for much of the year.
