Also called Maungawhau, Mount Eden is an iconic volcanic cone located on the edge of the Auckland CBD. At 196 m high, it is Auckland’s tallest volcano and it boasts stunning views of the city, its harbours and the surrounding suburbs. Maungawhau is of significance to Māori, with remains of settlements dating back over 800 years. To learn more about its history, visit the education centre near the upper car park. Along with other volcanic maunga (mountains) in Auckland, Maungawhau is on a tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Maungawhau is a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise over the city if you’re an early bird, or perhaps take a picnic dinner and watch the sunset instead. With the maunga closed to vehicles, it's safe for walking, cycling and a great spot to get a dose of nature among New Zealand’s largest city.

Remember: The volcanic crater is sacred and it is prohibited to enter. Treat the sacred site with respect, stay on marked paths and follow any signage.

Personal tip: I recommend putting aside a few hours to explore Maungawhau. With two craters and beautiful views of the city, you’ll want to take a camera along and move slowly, taking it all in. There’s also a cafe near the car park, so grab a coffee, and ice cream or even brunch!

Pronunciation: Maungawhau: moe-ngaa-foe
