Sometimes called the Ha Long Bay of New Zealand, Duke’s Nose is a rewarding hike to a viewpoint over Taupō Bay. The natural rock formation juts out into the ocean, with beautiful 360 degree views of the harbour. You can access Duke’s Nose from Totara North via a 2.5 hour track or via water taxi to Lane’s Cove, followed by a 30 min hike to the top.

From Totara North, start on the 4WD track and follow DOC signage along the trail. The track then follows Wairakau Stream and includes two small stream crossings. The trail can be muddy after rainfall. The final 30 minutes of the hike are a steep climb, including with chains to reach the summit.

Travel north on SH10 and follow signs for Totara North. From Totara North Road, turn left into Campbell Road. The track starts at the end of Campbell Road. Parking is limited, park at the side of the road and be considerate of other drivers.

Remember: Stay safe, do not attempt the stream crossing if it is deep and impassable. Respect cultural practices and do not eat or drink at the summit.

Personal tip: Stay overnight at Lane Cove hut, or catch a water taxi to reduce your hiking time. Photographers will want to be here at golden hour, so remember to take a head torch if you will be walking in the dark.
