It needs no introduction, Milford Sound is renowned across the globe for its spectacular fjords, towering waterfalls and dramatic mountain scenery, all shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago. Located in Fiordland National Park, it’s one of New Zealand’s most iconic natural attractions.

The best way to explore Milford Sound is by a boat cruise, allowing you to get up close to the wildlife, sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls, including Bowen Falls and Stiring Falls - and on a rainy day, many many more falls! You can also walk the foreshore walk, with Mitre Peak towering above you, take a sunrise kayak, or tackle the 4-day Milford Track.

The drive to Milford is an experience in itself, through the hand-cut Homer Tunnel, where you may be greeted by friendly locals - the kea alpine parrot. Alternatively, you can catch a scenic flight from Queenstown to Milford and experience the dramatic landscapes from the sky, before taking a cruise on the fjord.

Remember: Drive safely and be courteous to other road users. You may want to allow vehicles to pass where it is safe to do so.

Personal tip: There is so much more I could say about Milford Sound, but here’s some advice: enjoy your visit, whatever the weather. In the rain, the fjord is moody and dramatic with more waterfalls than you can count. On a blue-sky day, you may not see as many waterfalls, but you will get to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of the cliffs.
