The Clay Cliffs near Ōmarama are a hidden gem of the South Island, with a unique landscape that makes you feel like you’re on another planet! You will see them as you drive along SH8 between Tekapō and Queenstown, but it is a detour off the main highway to get to the cliffs themselves. The towering pinnacles and ridges of clay are sculpted by nature, creating a maze-like formation to explore. Wander through the narrow ravines and marvel at the towering cliffs.

Located approximately 10 km west of Ōmarama. Follow signs onto Quailburn Road, then turn onto unsealed Quailburn-Clay Cliffs Road until you reach the car park.

Remember: The Clay Cliffs are on private land, so please respect the area by staying on designated paths and taking all rubbish with you. Take cash to pay a small kōha (donation) to enter the private property.

Personal tip: Don't forget your camera! Overcast days are my favourite time to photograph these cliffs, the lighting can be harsh at midday.

Pronunciation: Ōmarama - OR-maa-raa-maa

Tekapō - teh-kaa-POR
