There’s so much more to McLaren Falls than meets the eye! Located just 20 minutes outside Tauranga, the scenic reserve has lush native bush to explore, abundant birdlife - and of course waterfalls! At the entrance to the park is a large waterfall, with multiple streams cascading over the rocks.

There are several walking tracks throughout the park - walk to another waterfall tucked in the bush or come back at night to try your luck spotting glowworms alongside the trail! McLaren Falls are the perfect place for picnics, bushwalks, trout fishing (if you have a licence) or kayaking on the lake.

Remember: The main falls are dammed and the flow of the river can depend on time of year and dam releases. The deep pools are a popular swimming spot during low-flow, however it can be extremely dangerous during a high flow. Stay safe, do not attempt to swim if it is beyond your ability.

Personal tip: Visit after heavy rain if you want to see the waterfalls at their max - it’s truly a sight to behold. Or if you’d prefer to swim, visit during the drier summer months and enjoy taking a dip.

Pronunciation: Tauranga: toe-raa-ngaa
