The Roman Columns of Brindisi are two mysterious and magnificent columns located near the port of Brindisi, Italy, likely built around the 2nd or 3rd centuries CE. The purpose of these stunning structures remains a mystery, but it has been suggested that they were used to mark the end of the Via Appia and the entrance to the port, as well as serve as a point of reference for sailors entering the port. What is known, however, is that by the 14th-century, the two columns had become a symbol of the city and even appear on its coat of arms today. Originally, there were two columns, but unfortunately one collapsed after an earthquake in 1528 and its ruins remained there until it was gifted to Lecce in 1659 to construct a monument dedicated to Saint Orontius. These awe-inspiring Roman Columns of Brindisi are sure to enthrall anyone looking to explore this unique historical site.
