Castel Sant'Angelo, or Hadrian's Tomb, is a towering cylindrical building in Rome, Italy. It was originally commissioned by Caesar Hadrian as his resting place and the mausoleum of him and his family. Today it is a museum, the highest in Rome, and has a rich history having served as a fort and prison over the years. Legend holds that the Archangel Michael appeared atop the mausoleum to end a plague in the city, inspiring its name. The castle is home to statues, including one of Saint Michael, mysterious urns, and stories, such as of Giordano Bruno being imprisoned there and Giacomo Puccini's Tosca leaping to her death from its ramparts.
