The municipality was created in 1838, and it consists of three villages—Hellesylt, Geiranger, and Liabygda—as well as the larger central village of Stranda. It is one of the most visited natural sites in the Nordic countries due to its stunning scenery and impressive landforms shaped by ice and water. There are four churches here, and some of the main attractions include the Seven Sisters waterfall and the mountain Dalsnibba. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities here, such as boating, fishing, hiking, skiing, and cycling.
