Depending on which route you continue northwards, going via this famous peninsula is an option if you have nerves of steel and a sturdy 4WD with high ground clearance (Toyota LandCruiser, Suzuki Jimny or similar). Often referred to as Iceland's sketchiest road, this f-road (F622) is a narrow exposed dirt road that takes you the coastal route between Arnarfjörður to Dýrafjörður. The road (which at some points can hardly be considered a road) was a private initiative built by a local legend Elís Kjaran and his bulldozer which he nicknamed the Tea Spoon. At some points it’s hanging at the side of a cliff, it passes by abandoned farms and lupin fields, it crosses small rivers and some parts of it are practically on the rocky coast. In fact, you must time it so that you’re driving it during low tide, as some sections of it disappear when tide is high. If you’re not equipped to drive this route yourself but still want to experience it, then going with Iceland Backcountry Travel is a great option. Guide Gummi on his massive truck will get you safely through any challenge. Besides being a trustworthy wild man he’s just a nice guy with a million stories to tell. Note that this route is only open during the summer months.
