The Alex Knob Track in Westland Tai Poutini National Park is a challenging day hike that offers epic views of Franz Josef Glacier without needing a helicopter ride. The track starts at the Alex Knob/Lake Wombat carpark and takes you through forests, alpine meadows, and herb fields before reaching the summit. Make sure to start early to beat the afternoon clouds and pack warm clothes, water, and insect repellent. Keep an eye out for forest birds like tui and bellbirds along the way. It's a tough trek, but the views are totally worth it!
