Faro di Akrotiri is an ancient settlement in Santorini, Greece that was preserved by volcanic ash after one of the largest-ever volcanic eruptions. It is renowned for its spectacular archaeological site that reveals evidence of an affluent city dating back to the second millennium BC. The 5% of the site that has been excavated contains over 15,000 pots, remains of two ‘skyscrapers’ and one of the world’s oldest toilets. Visiting Akrotiri is a must-do activity on any itinerary to Santorini; due to the lack of historical context at the site, a guide is highly recommended. Many of the highlights of the site have been moved to other museums to preserve them better, so be aware of this when planning your trip. Whether you join a guided tour or explore independently, a visit to Akrotiri will definitely be an adventure to remember!
