Dettifoss, located in North Iceland, is a powerhouse waterfall that ranks as the second most powerful in Europe. Fed by the glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, it thunders down 45 meters into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Surrounded by stunning natural beauty, Dettifoss is a place I always recommend to all visitors to the area.
The waterfall can be visited from both sides. The west side has paved road, big parking lot and toilets. The east side is less visited and less busy and perhaps my favourite side despite rough gravel road and more difficult approach.
Winter : Note that the road 864 on the east side of the river isn't being maintained in the winter.
