The Icelandic Parliament is one of the oldest in the world, dating back to 930 AD. The current building, which was built in 1881, has played a vital role in Iceland's political history, including the country's fight for independence from Denmark.

What I love about the parliament building is its impressive neoclassical architecture. The building's facade features intricate carvings and a striking copper dome, making it a beautiful and photogenic destination.

The original building is made of stone but an add-on to the building was created in recent years. There is even more construction happening now to create an even bigger parliament house.

Any group that wants to see the inside of the Parliament building can book a free tour that is 45-60 minutes long. You’ll learn about the work and function of the Parliament and the history of Iceland’s government.

Due to it being in the heart of Reykjavik, you can easily walk to it and other historic buildings in the area.

Requests for visits to Parliament House should be made by email or tel. (354) 563 0500. heimsoknir@althingi.is
