The Christ the King aka 'Cristo Rei' statue is an Art Deco monument located in Garajau, Madeira, and serves as a symbol of tolerance on the island for all religious backgrounds. Financed by Aires de Ornelas and his wife, the 15 metre tall structure was created by French artists Georges Serraz and Pierre Charles Lenoir. Completed in 1927, this monumental statue is 4 years older than its Brazilian cousin, making it one of the earliest colossal statues of Jesus in the world! The magnificent structure, overlooking the Atlantic ocean, stands testament to the resilient spirit of Madeira and its people.
