Lakagígar Laki is an exciting and mysterious volcanic site located in western Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. This volcanic fissure consists of at least 130 vents and spans across 15 miles long. During the period from June 1783 to February 1784, the eruption that took place from the Laki fissure and Grímsvötn volcano caused massive destruction both geographically and socially. The enormous amount of basalt lava, hydrogen fluoric acid and sulfur dioxide compounds released during this event led to death tolls counting in the thousands. In addition, the 120 million tonnes of sulfur dioxide emitted into the Northern Hemisphere caused global temperatures to drop and a drought to occur in North Africa and India. To this day, it remains one of the most deadly events of its kind in recent history.
