The Seydisfjordur Church is a remarkable example of an early Viking age timber-constructed church. Dating back to nearly 1000 years ago, the site still bears strong archaeological and historical significance today. The rectangular building with a square choir was constructed with a variety of driftwood sourced from Siberia, Norway, Switzerland and elsewhere, and features three stone crosses and a green porphyry altar stone. Its surrounding churchyard hosts a number of burials in which women were buried to the north, men to the south and children around the choir. Recent excavations have shed light on this Viking Age church and its incredible cultural value, giving insight into life during the Viking Age.
