The Salt Mines of Maras, located in Peru, are a historic site dating back to pre-Hispanic times. These salt extraction centers have been used for centuries by various communities and were even owned by descendants of the Inca nobility. Today, around 400 families own salt wells in the area, managing salt administration and commercialization through a local company. The Peruvian government is currently working towards nominating the Salt Mines of Maras as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
