The Pastoruri Glacier, located in Peru's Cordillera Blanca, is one of the last remaining glaciers in the tropical regions of South America. Covering around 8 square kilometers and stretching 4 kilometers long, this glacier is a popular spot for tourists, snowboarders, and ice climbers. However, it is rapidly retreating, losing 22% of its size and 15.5% of its ice mass in the last few decades. Efforts to slow down the melting process, like covering the ice with sawdust, have shown some success on a small scale, but the overall trend of retreat seems irreversible.
